Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital Names Stroke and Trauma Coordinator
WESTON, WV (Agusut 15, 2022) - Mon Health Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital is pleased to announce Morgan Norman, RN, as its first Stroke and Trauma Coordinator.
Norman received her Bachelor in Exercise Science from Fairmont State University and her Bachelor of Nursing from West Virginia University.
One of Norman's first tasks in her new position is to prepare the hospital for a Stroke Center Certification with the nationally-recognized Acute Stroke Ready program. She is coordinating the effort with the SJMH Stroke Ready Committee. This certification allows smaller, rural hospitals to demonstrate quality by applying standards of care for the initial treatment of stroke patients, when it is important to have rapid action and proper medications. The goal isto save lives and limit the long-term disabling effects of strokes.
Norman explained that certified facilities become part of a region's larger stroke system of care, which means a stroke patient can be directed to the most qualified facility. As a certified stroke center, the hospital will prove that it is equipped to evaluate, stabilize, and provide emergency care to patients with acute stroke symptoms.
West Virginia is ranked the seventh highest in the nation in the prevalence of stroke (4.4%). In 2014, the rate of strokes per 100,000 people was 54.2% for women, and 54% for men in Lewis County, which is slightly less than the West Virginia average.
